Wiser
Wiser is a line of smart home products by Schneider Electric, a multinational corporation specializing in energy management and automation.
In 2016, Schneider Electric sought to unite its various residential smart home offerings into a single consumer grade IoT solution. The Wiser ecosystem offers European homeowners an affordable luxury: control and automation of their home’s connected heating, lighting, and shutter devices - all from the Wiser app.

Challenge
Our challenge was to create a cohesive, elevated user experience across countries, products, and product features. The solution needed to be adaptable enough to accommodate device integrations of multiple disparate product lines. Beyond typical client/server communications, the Wiser app also needed to communicate with the smart devices installed in the home, adding an additional UX component to consider.
Easy, failsafe, and repeatable device pairing process accounting for many potential edge cases.
High-end look and feel while adhering to Schneider’s (largely commercially focused) brand guidelines.
Visual feedback/reward in response to certain actions, since the user may not be physically near the device.
Simple, intuitive device control and automation accommodating many categories of product.
Solution
Scalability
A predictable, repeatable installation process was achieved to accommodate a wide range of product categories.
App Visual Aesthetic
The company brand, Life Is On, was reimagined to become relevant to the end consumer. Custom background imagery depicting traces of life in the home gives subtle context about what is going on at home and provides instant visual feedback in response to user behaviors regarding automation. Glancing at the app even without taking action will tell the user which state his home is in - Home, Away or Sleep.
Device Control
Device control was rapidly prototyped and heavily user tested to accomplish a satisfying interaction. The user can tap or swipe anywhere on the screen to turn off a light, change the setpoint, or open/close the shutters.

Home Automation
Moments are Wiser’s vessel for home automation. Moments give the user highly configurable control over his home environment, incorporating one or many device actions and optional triggers.. A user can change the environment at home with just a tap. Moments were heavily user tested to be as intuitive and versatile as possible. During testing, we discovered that users thought about automation first in terms of the smart devices in the home (e.g., the living room light) and secondly what they wanted to accomplish (e.g., dim to 50%). This informed our moment builder sequence for actions.
Wiser moments are an easy way to accomplish to control devices with just a tap.
